How we stop progressive gum disease in its tracks; restore a healthy and balanced gum line
There are many opportunities for Brampton Dental Arts to “catch” and intervene with progressive gum disease. Additionally, Dr. Azeem Sheikh has considerable expertise in providing a wide range of periodontal (gum) therapies in-house. Dr. Sheikh of Brampton, Ontario, is as adept at resolving and reversing the effects of early-stage inflammation or gingivitis as he is at getting rid of the infection that characterizes advanced periodontitis.
Staying ahead of gum disease
The gums surround and protect the teeth. They should generally be pink-red and firm. They do not feel tender when touched or bleed when a toothbrush or floss comes in contact with them. As disease takes hold, the gums may appear inflamed. Other symptoms of gingivitis may be subtle or not present at all and can include dusky or darker than usual gums and the “pink in the sink” mentioned above related to gingival bleeding.
At this stage, we can reverse the effects of the disease. Your gums can be restored to their health with changes to home care and the addition of products like antibacterial rinses. Dr. Sheikh may also “prescribe” the deep cleaning alternative to the “standard” dental cleaning or prophy (Scaling and Root Planing).
This non-surgical procedure is also appropriate for some earlier-stage cases of periodontitis. Advanced gum disease is further defined by a severe infection. At this stage, the soft tissues around the teeth break down. Without prompt treatment, periodontitis can also erode the supportive bone. Once these tissues are gone, they are gone for good unless we regenerate them. Dr. Sheikh provides an array of surgical therapies to heal the gums and rebuild deteriorated or lost soft and hard tissue(s).

Topical or oral antibiotics help clear the infection, while surgical techniques may be used to encourage natural healing and restore the gums and supportive bone. Treatment recommendations are tailored to your needs; for instance, those who have lost gum tissue may benefit from Dr. Sheikh’s sophisticated “tunnel technique.” This approach to gum grafting involves sliding the donor tissue (graft) into a small opening. Surgical adhesive or sutures are then used to anchor the tissue. This process may further be complemented by the use of AlloDerm®, a human tissue derivative that unlocks the body’s natural regenerative capabilities.
