Your damaged tooth is like a blank canvas post-root canal therapy! Giving teeth a second chance, painlessly

The roots of the teeth serve many essential functions; notably, they help to support healthy chewing and speech function by providing utmost stability to the rest of the tooth. They hold the tooth in place or “root” it in the jawbone. These structural components, however, are susceptible to potential damage in the form of cracks, large cavities, severe decay, and trauma or injury.

Fortunately, Dr. Azeem Sheikh of Brampton Dental Arts can treat the canals inside these roots to protect the affected tooth and surrounding tissues from further complications. In doing so, the root canal procedure helps patients from across Southern Ontario avoid the loss or removal of a deeply damaged or infected tooth.

Treating root canals is nothing to fear … really!

The basic principles behind a “simple” filling and root canal therapy are similar; a filling quite literally “fills in” the cavity or the hole or damage that is caused by decay. Root canal treatment “fills in” the roots of the teeth. When decay or damage progresses without treatment, it penetrates the deeper layers of the tooth. Once it reaches the nerve, pain can arise due to associated inflammation. This inflammation can turn into an infection. Sometimes, the tooth becomes infected quickly – even skipping the inflammation stage.

Before filling the tooth’s roots to rebuild its structure, we must remove the damaged innermost tissues. These tissues include the nerves responsible for the sensation of often intense and persistent pain. By removing these nerves, you no longer experience pain. Yet, the structure of the tooth remains intact. The tooth is preserved.

Think of it as Brampton Dental Arts now having the ability to give your tooth a “blank canvas.” Your tooth gets a fresh start and a second chance. This “do-over” process is also painless. We use gentle techniques and precision anesthetics. That way, you don’t feel anything during treatment. If you need a little help relaxing, we can also address sedative methods.

Root canal therapy is not only gentle and straightforward (primarily completed in 30 to 90 minutes), but it is also highly successful – as long as you maintain follow-up visits and care for your teeth and gums properly. Notably, it is essential to restore the treated tooth with a crown as advised by Dr. Sheikh. This is generally after the infection has cleared and the tooth has healed. But don’t wait too long, as failure to promptly place the restoration is a common source of early root canal procedure failures.
