Root Canal

Save your Tooth with Dental Root Canal Treatment

There are a few phrases that strike fear in the hearts of people, like “root canal.” This procedure has the worst reputation in dentistry. In fact, many people often joke about how they’d rather “get a root canal” than do something they find unappealing. However, like many things, this perception is blown way out of proportion.

However, while root canals are not an enjoyable experience by any stretch, they are also not as horrible as many make them out to be. As with many treatments, the quality of the practitioner plays a significant role in the patient’s overall comfort and outcome.

That’s why at Brampton Dental Arts, you can rest easy knowing that an experienced and highly trained professional like Dr. Azeem Sheikh can restore your smile using a root canal procedure that’s safe, comfortable, and highly effective.

Why Are Root Canals Important?

Root canals, also known as “endodontic therapy,” are used to eliminate infected tissues while relieving pain produced by irritated nerves inside your mouth. The procedure is used to save a tooth from extraction.

The treatment is often recommended whenever “pulp,” or soft oral tissue, becomes inflamed due to infection. Such a condition may cause someone a lot of pain and discomfort and lead to the tooth becoming abscessed.

If this condition isn’t treated right away, it can cause severe facial swelling and bone loss around the tooth, holes in the infected tooth, and the infection could spread to other areas of the body.

Here are a few reasons why someone may need a root canal:

  • Sudden traumatic injury to a tooth that could have happened recently or years ago.
  • Repeated dental treatments on the infected tooth
  • Deep-seated decay inside the tooth
  • A crack or chip in the tooth

The Root Canal Procedure Explained

Root canal procedures are not what many people envision in their imagination. The first stage involves numbing the area with a highly effective local anesthetic to ensure you are pain-free and comfortable while Dr. Sheikh goes to work.

The doctor then drills a small opening into the infected tooth, where he proceeds to clean out the infected pulp and nerves.

The hole is then filled and shaped using gutta-percha, a rubber-like material used to seal the tooth following a root canal.

The final step involves placing a restoration on your tooth, usually a porcelain crown, to protect it from damage as it begins the healing process.

You see, there’s not much to it! Most root canals only take 30 minutes and a little over an hour. But there are a few cases that may demand more time and perhaps a second appointment if you’re getting a filling or permanent crown.
