When gum tissue pulls back, it exposes root surfaces of teeth. This rough, yellowish dentin structure detracts from the smile. It is also sensitive and prone to decay. Gum recession may be triggered by:

  • Oral trauma
  • Aggressive orthodontics
  • Periodontal disease
  • Harsh brushing
  • Clenching or grinding
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Aging

Gum recession surgery, also known as root coverage, restores an attractive gum line and protects teeth. It is commonly performed on front teeth, but can be done anywhere in the arch, for one tooth or as many as needed. The procedure involves removing a small amount of healthy material from the roof of the mouth. Then, Dr. Sheikh uses an advanced “tunnel technique” to slide the graft into an opening created in gum tissue. The graft is anchored with surgical adhesive or sutures. In some cases, a grafting alternative called AlloDerm® is appropriate. Using this human tissue derivative avoids a donor surgical site and stimulates the body’s natural regeneration.

When too much gum tissues makes teeth appear short, crown lengthening removes and shapes gums, restoring attractive pink to white proportions. Crown lengthening may also be needed when a tooth has decay or is broken below the gum line. Tissue is removed, exposing more of the tooth to prepare it for restoration.

Gingivitis and periodontal disease are inflammatory conditions affecting gums, and without gum infection treatment, deeper connective tissues and bone. As a gum disease cure, surgery may be necessary to remove diseased tissue, and to smooth and sanitize root surfaces, allowing healing to begin.
