Can Receding Gums Be Treated and Reversed?

Unfortunately, receding gums are a common problem, and if not treated quickly, you could suffer permanent damage. Even if you can’t reverse gum damage, it can be treated. With receding gums, the risk of tooth decay, sensitivity, and tooth loss may increase. Contact Brampton Dental Arts in Brampton, Ontario, for gum recession treatments, including gum surgery.

Most Common Causes of Receding Gums:

  • Periodontal disease
  • Hard bristles on your toothbrush
  • Smoking
  • Bad oral hygiene

Receding Gum Treatment: What You Need to Know

Often, receding gums are the result of periodontal disease. Unfortunately, there’s no way to reverse periodontal disease and regrow gums. However, gum recession can be treated and managed. Gum surgery can also restore your gums (but they won’t grow back). With daily effort and cleaning, you may be able to prevent tooth loss and tooth decay.

It’s wise to see a dentist regularly. You can also keep a close eye on your teeth and gums at home. If your gums seem inflamed or more of your teeth are exposed (your teeth might look longer, for example), you may be suffering from gum loss. You might also notice bad breath, loose teeth, and other issues.

It’s pretty much impossible to reverse gum loss and restore your gums completely. Since receding gums can’t be reversed, it’s best to stop gum loss before it worsens. Regular, good oral care will help you fight off infections, bacteria, and other issues.

The right dental surgeries may also stop gum recession and improve oral health. Also known as root coverage, it can restore your gums and may help prevent infections.

Besides periodontal disease, hard bristles on your toothbrush may also be causing your gums to recede. If so, switching to a toothbrush with soft bristles may prevent further damage.

Bad Habits and Gum Recession

Smoking increases your risks of receding gums and other oral health problems too. Smoking has also been linked to cancer in the mouth, throat, and lungs. It would be best if you kicked the habit and other habits causing gum loss.

Teeth grinding, injuries (from sports), and various other issues could cause receding gums and other issues. When you see your dentist for your regularly scheduled appointment, they will check for receding gums, gingivitis, and other problems.

Want to prevent receding gums and gum disease? Then good oral health is essential. Brushing your teeth at least twice a day, for two minutes each time, regular flossing, using mouthwash, and otherwise following your dentist’s instructions may help.
